Mountain bikes (often called MTBs or ATBs) are built tough - strong enough to cope with the rigours of off-road riding. This makes them more versatile than a road bike, at the expense of speed and weight. We recommend spending at least £200 on a mountain bike, and around £400 or more if you plan on regular off-road riding - this will get you a bike that's fun to ride, and be more reliable than a cheaper "look-alike" type of bike.
