Road bikes are designed for speed. Aerodynamic efficiency makes a big difference on the road at higher speeds, so the efficient dropped-handlebar position of a road bike helps maximise your energy output. For non-racers, you can achieve almost the same efficiency with more comfort by choosing a model with a higher front, such as Trek's Performance geometry range or the Roubaix from Specialized. These models are usually easier to fit mudguards to, if you're looking for an ideal winter training bike too!
